Getting Started and Next Steps: Exciting Group Classes for ages 5 - 12

Does your child want to sing or learn an instrument in a fun and encouraging environment? The following group classes are excellent introductory options. Each class is designed to build a solid musical foundation and develop the skills necessary for private study, while helping students explore their creativity in a nurturing group setting.

exploring-drumsExploring Drums (ages 5-6)
Designed for beginners and as a next step for recent graduates of Early Childhood and Elementary Music classes, this hands-on class guides students as they explore the vast diversity of the percussive world.

Musical Journey (ages 6-7)
This class explores the music and languages of many different countries and cultures. In today’s global community, music is the perfect conduit to promote respect and understanding of many cultures and at the same time introduce new musical concepts.

string-orchString Orchestra for Beginners (ages 6-8)
Inspired by the “El Sistema” model of the Venezuelan Youth Orchestra System, young string players are introduced to their instruments (violin, viola, or cello) through an orchestral experience. The group environment has proven to be an encouraging and rewarding experience for young beginners.

This class provides students who have not studied music previously with an introduction to music at the piano. Utilizing an acoustic piano, students develop a strong foundation in rhythm, note reading, and basic technique that leads to successful private study the following year.

Music Moves (A-D) (through age 7)
The Music Moves series provides a solid foundation in music literacy to prepare children for individual instrumental lessons, and provides an enrichment experience for children already studying an instrument. Based on the approach of composer Carl Orff, these classes center on movement and focus on things children like to do: sing, chant rhymes, dance, and play instruments.

music-movesBuilding Musical Bridges (ages 7-9)
“Bridging” our Elementary Music classes with private instrument study, this class offers older children more structured learning of complex musical ideas, note-reading and basic theory. Students develop and perform in multiple disciplines including singing, Orff instruments, composition, basic percussion and movement/dance.

Drums Around the World (ages 7-11)
This class is an excellent way to get started with percussion and is an appropriate next step for recent graduates of Early Childhood and Elementary Music classes. Students explore percussion instruments from around the world in a relaxed and encouraging setting.

Beginning Harp Sampler (ages 7-12)
This class provides students with the opportunity to try out the harp before committing to private lessons and instrument rental/purchase.  Using harps at Levine, students explore the instrument’s history, proper playing posture, hand position, and introductory technique.

Treble Voices (ages 7-12)
This vocal enrichment program teaches students the musicianship skills and character building required for ensemble singing. Students learn basic vocal technique, music theory, and sightsinging, which are skills that are vital to their development as young musicians.

Children’s Chorus (ages 8-12)
This performing ensemble focuses on developing age-appropriate vocal technique and musicianship skills through children’s choral literature. Benefits of this chorus include attaining artistic integrity, musicality, ensemble experience and musical literacy all while the students gain confidence, make friendships and find their own voices through music.

Beginning Guitar Class (ages 8-12)guitar-slide-1
Start your guitar study by learning to play great songs from around the world with confidence and competence. Learn the fundamental habits of great guitar players while mastering note reading, basic melodies, right-hand fingerpicking technique, arpeggio patterns, chords, and strums.

Vocal Basics for Young Singers (ages 9-12)
This class teaches young singers to use their voices in ways every musician needs to know: proper vocal technique (breath and line), part-singing (ear and harmony work) and basic music reading. All of these skills will greatly enhance and accelerate readiness for chorus auditions, school musicals, and private lessons.
