Summer Session: Building Blocks for Babies

(Ages 4 - 12 months with parent/caregiver)

Join us for fun this summer as we take a trip around the world and visit a different continent each week! We start our journey in week one here in North America, and then head below the equator to South America for week two. After that, we hop across the Atlantic to visit our friends in Europe for week three.  Then we turn south to Africa in week four and then finally in week five we take a trip to Asia.

This class provides a wonderful opportunity for babies and toddlers to discover the joys of making music as they participate in musical activities such as singing songs and lullabies, chants, simple finger plays, wiggles, bounces, listening and movement. Simple percussion instruments are used, such as colorful shakers, drums and bells, and concepts such as body/spatial awareness, numbers and colors are reinforced through musical play. Participants receive guidance on children's musical development, along with tools that support the creation of a nurturing musical environment at home.

(Ages 1 - 3 years with parent/caregiver)

Call and response activities are introduced as well as activities that encourage creativity and individual contribution. Simple percussion instruments such as shakers, drums, and bells are used to enforce the learning of steady beat. Concepts such as body/spatial awareness, numbers, colors, shapes, seasons, family, and animals are reinforced through identification games and musical play. Participants receive guidance on children's musical development, along with tools that support the creation of a nurturing musical environment at home.

This class is the first in a series for young children designed for independent music making. Children playfully engage in a wide variety of musical activities, including singing, dancing, and playing basic pitched and un-pitched percussion instruments. Through musical stories, games, and activities, children will also be introduced to basic rhythmic and melodic concepts.

Summer Session: Exploring Music

(Ages 4-5 years without parent/caregiver)

Join us for fun this summer as we take a trip around the world and visit a different continent each week! This class reinforces and builds on musical skills introduced in the Adventures in Music class*, and introduces pre-notation for music reading. Children expand their musical vocabulary, pitch matching, and rhythmic abilities through songs, chants, and the use of pitched and un-pitched percussion instruments. They will develop listening skills, concentration, and a sense of timing as more complex and ensemble activities are introduced. 

* Please note that Adventures in Music is not a prerequisite.

Summer Session: Discovering Music

(Ages 5 - 6 years without parent/caregiver)

Join us for fun this summer as we take a trip around the world and visit a different continent each week! After that, we hop across the Atlantic to visit our friends in Europe for week three.  Then we turn south to Africa in week four and then finally in week five we take a trip to Asia.

This class expands on the musical foundation presented in the Exploring Music class*. More complex songs and games are used to reinforce and expand musical literacy concepts such as beat, rhythm, melodic form, harmony, and expression. Children develop musical independence through improvisation and learn to read basic notation as well as other musical symbols. Movement continues to play an important role, as circle games and line dances are incorporated.

Intro to Vocal Basics for Young Singers

(Ages 9 - 12)

Designed for brand new singers, this introductory class will give young singers an idea about what learning good vocal technique is all about. The basic rudiments of singing are covered in a group setting. The class is a fantastic preparation for the Levine School’s Vocal Basics class, held each Fall and Spring.

Singing in Different Styles

(Ages 15 to Adult)

Do you love singing and want to sing all types of music, but don't know how to carry your technique from one genre to the next? You are not alone. While some foundational principles of singing apply across many styles of music, there are also some signature differences in approach that make each genre unique. This class helps intermediate-level singers understand different vocal styles as well as develop a flexible technique that will allow them to perform music of different genres convincingly.

Beginning Guitar Boot Camp for Adults

(Adults)

It’s never too late to start learning the guitar! This is the perfect class for adult novices interested in starting a strong foundation on the guitar. Concepts covered include note reading, basic right- and left-hand technique, scales, arpeggios, and several beautiful songs. Participants need not have any previous experience or musical knowledge.

Advanced Blues Guitar - Summer

(Adults)

For adults with experience playing the blues guitar idiom, this advanced class will bring your guitar skills to the next level!  With a heavy emphasis on improvisation and advanced forms of the blues, concepts covered will include altering and ‘dressing up’ the 12-bar form, using major and minor blues scales across the neck, use of chromaticism and arpeggios in soloing, soloing over chord changes, minor blues, chord and scale theory, reading and writing basic music notation, and transcribing blues solos.

Beginning Blues Guitar

(Adults)

The perfect introduction to the blues for adult novices!  Participants will learn the skills needed to join a blues jam/open mic or even just jam along to their favorite recordings.  Concepts covered include the 12-bar blues form, the blues scale, basic 7th chord voicings and accompaniment patterns, picking, lead guitar techniques, working from simple music notation, chord charts and tab, and lots of improvisation.

Advanced Blues Guitar

(Adults)

For adults with some experience with the blues, this class takes your playing to the next level. Topics covered include altering and ‘dressing up’ the 12-bar form;  using major and minor blues scales across the neck;  soloing over chord changes; using chromaticism and arpeggios in soloing; minor blues, chord and scale theory; reading and writing basic music notation; and transcribing blues solos. There is a heavy emphasis on improvisation throughout the course, and many songs at the intersection of jazz and blues are used as teaching tools, along with songs brought in and suggested by students.

Students should already be comfortable with playing the 12-bar blues form in several keys using 7th chords, improvising using the blues scale, playing accompaniment, and using basic lead guitar techniques (picking, bending, slurs). Students must provide their own acoustic (non-classical) or electric guitar.

Theory Review & Analysis

(Adults)

The first four meetings of this engaging class for adults are devoted to a review of the basics of music theory needed for analysis (key signatures, meters, intervals, chords, etc.) and a chordal/tonal analysis of the J.S. Bach Prelude in C Major (from Book I of The Well-Tempered Clavier).  The remaining sessions are devoted to the study and analysis of short musical works or movements (up to 10 minutes in length) representing a variety of styles, genres, media, and techniques.  The specific list of works to be analyzed will be developed with input from the class participants.

Music Therapy: Group Sessions

Group music therapy sessions are designed to bring individuals of all levels of ability and disability together to make music and to develop and practice valuable social skills in a structured setting.  Sessions are tailored to the needs of the group members and are designed and led by Board Certified Music Therapists.

Through music therapy groups, the following functional areas can be addressed:

  • Gross and fine motor skills
  • Social skills
  • Speech, language, and communication skills
  • Emotional identification, management of emotions, and coping skills
  • Recreation and leisure skills
  • Self-expression and creativity development

Music therapy groups may include:

  • Singing and active music making with a variety of instruments
  • Movement to music
  • Song writing and lyric analysis
  • Role playing and rehearsal of social skills
  • Turn taking and sharing opportunities

Levine’s Music Therapy Program serves individuals with, but not limited to:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorders
  • Other Pervasive Developmental Disorders
  • Developmental, cognitive, and physical delays or disabilities

Cantemos Y Bailemos I

(Ages 1-2 years)

In this class toddlers and their parents/caregivers will experience the joys of making music by exploring the rich and vibrant folklore of Spain and Latin America. We will bounce, sing, dance, listen, move, and play simple games in Spanish.  Whether you want to continue the Spanish your child already speaks at home, or just want to have your child have some fun and learn songs and dances in Spanish, this is a wonderful way to experience music with your child.
 
En esta clase, los niños y sus padres/cuidadores van a gozar de hacer música explorando el folklor vibrante de España y América Latina. Vamos a cantar, bailar, escuchar, así como jugar juegos sencillos en español.  Si desea continuar el español que su hijo/hija habla en casa, o solamente quiere divertirse con su hijo/hija mientras que aprende canciones y bailes en español, esta es una manera maravillosa de hacer música con su niño.

Cantemos Y Bailemos II

(Ages 2 - 3 years)

In this class, children will continue to experience the joys of making music by exploring the cultures of Spain and Latin America by using more slightly complex materials and activities. We will sing, dance, listen, move and play simple games in Spanish but will start to introduce more individual singing and instrument-playing, as well as activities to enforce the learning of the steady beat.

Vamos a cantar, bailar, escuchar, y jugar juegos en español, pero empezaremos a cantar y tocar instrumentos individualmente. Nihao! Let's Sing and Dance

(Ages 3-5 without parent/caregiver)

This class is designed for independent music making in Chinese. Children playfully engage in a wide variety of musical activities in Chinese, including singing, dancing, and playing basic pitched and un-pitched percussion instruments. Through musical stories, games, and activities, children are also introduced to basic rhythmic and melodic concepts while reinforcing Chinese language skills. No previous knowledge of Chinese is necessary.

Cantemos Y Bailemos III

(Ages 3 - 4 years, without parent/caregiver)

In this class without parent/caregiver, children will independently engage in a variety of musical activities in Spanish including singing, dancing, and playing basic pitched and unpitched percussion instruments. Through musical stories, games and activities in Spanish, children will also be introduced to basic rhythm and melodic concepts. No previous knowledge of Spanish necessary. 

En esta clase sin padre/guardián, niños van a participar en una variedad de actividades musicales en español. Esto incluye cantar, bailar y tocar instrumentos básicos de percusión. Introduction to the Suzuki Philosophy for Parents

This introduction and philosophy course is for parents who are new to the Suzuki method or for parents who would like to know more before committing to lessons. Attendance in this course is required by at least one parent either before enrolling or during their first semester of Suzuki lessons.

The course consists of a 4-hour program that meets for two 2-hour sessions; parent(s) must attend both sessions, held at Levine’s NW DC campus. Session 1 is for all Suzuki parents and session 2 is instrument specific.

Session 1 (all Suzuki parents):  Saturday, September 22, 2012, 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Session 2 for Guitar:  Saturday, October 6, 2012, 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Session 2 for Piano:  Saturday, October 27, 2012, 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Summer Lesson Packs

Levine offers private instruction year round in 22 instruments and voice – for the beginner, lifelong amateur, or budding virtuoso. Private lessons provide students with individual instruction with one of Levine’s talented faculty members and are geared towards the specific goals, needs and aspirations of each student regardless of experience or age. Lessons are availalbe in both traditional and Suzuki methods.

Private Lessons

Private lessons provide students with individual instruction with one of Levine’s talented faculty members and are geared towards the specific goals, needs and aspirations of each student regardless of experience or age. For new students, we take the time and care to arrange individual placement interviews to match you with the right teacher to meet your individual musical needs. Private lesson students can participate in a variety of performance opportunities at Levine including juries, which provides students with an opportunity to play for other members of the faculty to demonstrate progress and receive positive feedback, as well as be a part of the Levine community where students of all ages, backgrounds and experiences come together in music.
